The Australian 50c piece was introduced in 1966. It didn't replace any particular predecimal coin but was presumably introduced as a higher-denomination coin. The 80% silver coins of 1966 were eventually replaced with cupronickel coins.

The 50c piece has long been the denomination of choice for commemoratives, with the first in 1970.
